Training

We pass on our knowledge and our commitment to democracy to new leaders and new generations every day.

Image SampleDemocracy North Carolina is dedicated to inspiring and training new civic leaders for our state, especially new leaders from younger generations who will secure and protect pro-democracy reform in the years to come.

We conduct training on several different levels. We provide training for our partners and our local coalitions on such topics as:

We also train young organizers through Democracy Summer and other activities.

In addition, the training of local leaders is a key goal of our organizing strategy. As we work with local coalition members, we are careful to guide, teach and inspire rather than simply telling people what to do. Our goal is to recruit and train new leaders who have the capacity, skills and drive to strengthen our state’s democracy – and who, in turn, can inspire and teach others.

What’s Ahead

We intend to significantly increase the training opportunities we offer in our coalition communities and through our statewide Democracy Advocate program. Specifically, we will be sponsoring pilot trainings on how to run for office, how government works, advocacy communications and other hands-on topics.

We also intend to expand our Democracy Summer program and explore training models with local schools, our partner organizations and youth-service agencies in order to increase civic awareness among high school students and other youth groups.

If you are interested in underwriting these new programs, please visit our Support Us section or contact our Development Director, Molly Beacham, at 919-286-6000, Ext. 12.

Inspiring a New Generation

Sarah Norris

"Thinking back over my experiences with Democracy North Carolina, I’ve learned a lot of things... most importantly, that compassion is the strongest and most powerful emotion I’ve ever witnessed in humans. Compassion for equality, compassion for democracy and compassion for others drives reformers to do the thing that challenges them, overwhelms them or the things that seem impossible. I deeply admire and respect every member of Democracy North Carolina. This internship has helped me realize that compassion resides in every one of us; we just have to be brave enough to follow wherever it leads us. I’ve learned people will listen to what I have to say, if I take the time to articulate it. I’ve learned we can all be heroes, if we are willing to bear the burden of inspiration and endure the difficulties of disappointment. We are all capable, we are all qualified, we now must reach for the stars."
