An Outstanding Resource on Local Democracy:
A brilliant and generous team of authors have named Democracy North Carolina as the recipient of proceeds from their book, Local Democracy Under Siege: Activism, Public Interest and Private Politics. The book is a study of five North Carolina communities, including some Democracy NC target areas. It is a must-read for anyone concerned about creating a truly participatory society.
Many thanks to its authors and UNC faculty members Donald Nonini and Dorothy Holland for their research and philanthropy. You can order on-line at any book site. It's also available at Triangle bookstores, including Bull's Head Bookshop (UNC-Chapel Hill), Regulator Bookshop (Durham) and Quail Ridge Books & Music (Raleigh).
We also have many reports on these topics in our Research Library section. >>

Getting the Word Out

Distribution is a key component of any educational strategy. One way we get the word out efficiently is distributing materials at statewide conventions. This strategy allowed us to hand out over 20,000 voter guides in under an hour at the NAACP convention in October of 2008 and it consistently allows us to get dozens of postcards signed in support of Voter-Owned Elections by delegates at various conventions each year. We also frequently distribute our materials at political party meetings, organizational meetings, festivals, fairs, farmers’ markets, special events, forums sponsored by other groups and just about any place where people gather. If your group is planning an event we could attend in order to distribute our materials, please let us know.
