Pollution Lobby Update & Past ResearchHere are some examples of research by Democracy North Carolina or its predecessor organizations looking into the political clout of the Pollution Lobby in North Carolina. For every $100 the Conservation Council PAC or Sierra Club PAC gave a candidate in the 2002 and 2004 General Assembly elections, PACs for the pollution lobby put in more than $5,000. The people of North Carolina strongly support conservation, but our public officials are increasingly dependent on the pollution lobby for political donations. Special-interest money is often at the root of the conflict between public good and private gain. Candidates need an alternative source of "clean" campaign funds -- a Voter-Owned Elections program that offers public financing to candidates who accept strict spending limits and receive hundreds of small, authorizing donations from registered voters.
