Political Groups: Take Action
We work with political groups from both sides of the aisle on selected activities.

Democracy North Carolina is a nonpartisan organization, but we do work with partisan political organizations on those occasions when our civic engagement goals coincide and it is permissible to do so. We do not engage in partisan activities, coordinate with campaigns or support candidates.
However, we often provide print materials to political parties and our speakers are happy to appear at party meetings to educate people on such issues as public campaign financing, the influence of special interest money on government, voting rights and voter turnout.
We also provide materials and speak on the following elements of our Democracy Agenda:
- Extending public campaign financing.
- Expanding Same Day Registration & Voting.
- Sharpening lobbying/ethics law.
- Exploring Instant Runoff Voting.
- Promoting ex-felon voting rights.
- Regulating 527 committees and electioneering groups.
- Reforming the Electoral College.
- Protecting the right to vote.
- Improving and opening up the political process.

A Nonpartisan Approach
During 2008, Democracy NC worked with several county-level political parties to fill in a gap in existing voter education: teaching people convicted of a felony or misdemeanor about their voting rights. Our role was to provide nonpartisan brochures and explain how current laws affected the timing of their ability to register and vote. Soon after the election, when we turned to our legislative priorities, we began working with party leaders across the political spectrum to promote campaign finance reform at the federal, state and local levels, as well as to make it easier for inmates in county jails (awaiting trial or convicted of a misdemeanor) to exercise their right to vote.
