Work for Us
We work hard, we work smart — and we work together.
Working with Democracy NC means you are part of a small but highly productive team focused on achieving short-term results that bring about long-term change.
We are headquartered in Durham, where most of our staff lives, but our organizers spend a great deal of time in their local areas.
Democracy North Carolina is an equal opportunity employer that seeks to go beyond the requirements of the law and maintain a staff as diversified as our great state itself.
Open Jobs
There are no open staff jobs at the moment. Please review the opportunities below and check back here in the future. We have also listed some useful non-profit job sites in our Useful Links section at lower right.
Internships
We have hosted past interns from NCCU and UNC-Chapel Hill and would be happy to discuss a semester-long project or community service plan with you. (As a nonpartisan, non-profit organization, we qualify for inclusion on most college community service lists.) If you are a Political Science, Statistics, Journalism, English or Sociology major and you are interested in earning community service or class credits for volunteering with us, please contact us with your professor’s name or your university’s community service office information and we will explore the possibility of your interning with us.
In addition, Democracy North Carolina runs a summer program for North Carolina college and university students called Democracy Summer. Students who are accepted to this 9-week summer program learn the basics of community organizing for social change, including the connections between money in politics and the social justice issues of environment, race, healthcare and voting rights in North Carolina. They also learn grassroots advocacy tactics. Applications are typically accepted each year beginning in February. Click here to learn more about Democracy Summer.
Volunteer Positions
If you live in one of our coalition areas and are interested in volunteering in your hometown, please contact the field organizer for that area for information on how you can help.
If you live in or near Durham and would like to volunteer at our headquarters, please visit our Volunteer section for more information on what our needs are.
If you live in other areas of the state, please consider becoming a Democracy Advocate and help us spread the word on our activities and issues.
Board Positions
We are currently seeking Board members from the Western and Central parts of the state who have strong business, fundraising or donor networking skills. Please visit our Board of Directors section for more information.
Motivating Others Is an Art
Hands-on organizing is hard work, but there is no better way to learn lifelong skills like issue advocacy, community building and inspiring others. Virtually all of our staff members have hands-on organizing experience, and many of our Democracy Summer interns (pictured above) have gone on to pursue careers in non-profit administration and advocacy, equipped with a better understanding of what it takes to engage people in social change.
